I wasn't sure if I was going to talk about American Idol this year or not, especially after Tuesday's show when the males started out. It was fairly horrid. But, then we watched the ladies on Wednesday's show, I knew that it could be a very good season. There were 3 or 4 females who really tore it up, and wowed me. The men made me shudder, for the most part. And, as always, Simon has so far been spot on, in his candid remarks and criticism. Surprisingly, the other two have at least been somewhat more "real" about things and not just being nice all the time.
At first I was thinking that it wasn't really fair that there had to be two males AND two females voted off, because the women were so much better. However, then I remembered that there were also at least 5 females who were also quite terrible, so there was definitely reason to boot them off the show. I could *easily* at this point cut the group down to the top 12. Nerves or not, one can't deny natural ability, or inability. Thankfully, Wednesday's show ditched 4 of the worst, though there are still at least 6 others who deserved the hook.
One thing of note, is the immense ethnic diversity within the group of males. I'm almost positive this is the most diverse group of men that has ever been on the show. There is a young guy of (I believe) Indian descent, an Asian, several African-Americans, and 3 of Hispanic descent. Oh yeah, and one white guy with the weirdest ears and head shape I have ever seen.
Okay, now if I'm "off" on any of these, don't crucify me. I am not good at knowing the difference between Latino and Hispanic, and I really don't know what nationality that Sanjaya guy is, but to me he looks Indian, or Pakistani or Israeli or something. I haven't paid close enough attention to have learned it from the show, if they indeed spoke about it. All I know is, he is a cheesy person, and not a great singer, plain and simple. That, and he should get a job as either a shampoo or toothpaste model.
Anyhoo, from the men's side, we're bidding adieu to Paul Kim (pic, above) and Rudy Cardenas (to the left). Honestly, they weren't the worst this week. Rudy was actually one of the better performers, so I'm not sure what America was thinking. No, he wasn't "good", but he was certainly WAY better than several of the others. Had I voted, I would have voted off that Sanjaya guy, as well as Sundance Head, who was just appalling, but I didn't vote (because I'd Tivo'd the show and it was too late).
The ladies were pretty easy. The AI audience ditched Nicole Tranquillo (top left) and Amy Krebs (bottom left)--P.S. is it just me, or does Amy Krebs kind of look like Andrea Sevde? Again, I wouldn't say that these two were the *worst* (though at best they only had another week or two to go anyway), because in my opinion that dubious honor would go to Salmonella...Oops, I mean ANTOnella Barba and Leslie Hunt . Antonella is absolutely beautiful, I'll give her that. She also seemed really sweet from the audition stuff, and I was kind of rooting for her before. But, alas, not only can she
not sing (especially considering the awesome talent that she's up against), but she has very low confidence on stage, which makes it worse. I think she made it through another week because she's a hottie. Leslie Hunt? Not sure why she made it further, but I suppose only 2 can go!
So, who do I really like thus far? Melinda Doolittle has thus far been my favorite, from her original audition, through Wednesday's show. She is fantastic. Also in her league are Sabrina Sloan and Lakisha Jones. JUST phenomenal. Nipping at their heels? None other than Stephanie Edwards. Jordin Sparks is also quite good, but still very young and I haven't heard her hit her stride quite yet. I like Gina Glocksen fairly well too, but in comparison to the other 5 I'd mentioned, she's just not good enough.
Notice how there aren't any men mentioned there? That's because none of them really caught my attention, other than that cutie Blake Lewis, who also does the beat-boxing. He wasn't great the other night, but I really liked the song he sang, and he's got a cute personality. Oh yeah, and even though Kevin thinks Jared Cotter has a weird look, I think he is REALLY cute. Plus, I like to make "Welcome Back, Kotter" references when he's on the screen. Oh yeah, and Chris Sligh is a TOTAL hoot. I want him to come to my next birthday party.

Alright, enough from me. I'm probably the only one who has been watching. Can you tell I am getting out even less these days?? And, even less so this weekend. We're supposed to get over a foot of snow, on top of freezing rain. FUN! I might have to call my luvah Simon for some provisions...
